Occupational therapists in the acute care setting focus on:

  • Addressing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors affecting daily activities

    • E.g., asking questions about the patient’s prior level of function, home environment, upper body/ lower body range of motion and strength, etc.

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized treatment plans

  • Implementing therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing mobility, self-care, and safety

    • E.g., educating on importance of mobility to prevent further complications and encourage out of bed mobility (OOB) during the patient’s hospital stay.

  • Educating patients and caregivers to support post-discharge recovery and ensure continuity of care.
