Occupational therapists in the acute care setting focus on:
Addressing physical, cognitive, and psychosocial factors affecting daily activities
E.g., asking questions about the patient’s prior level of function, home environment, upper body/ lower body range of motion and strength, etc.
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized treatment plans
Implementing therapeutic interventions aimed at enhancing mobility, self-care, and safety
E.g., educating on importance of mobility to prevent further complications and encourage out of bed mobility (OOB) during the patient’s hospital stay.
Educating patients and caregivers to support post-discharge recovery and ensure continuity of care.
